Signs Your AC Is Breaking Down
An air conditioner that is failing works harder before it stops working at all. That extra effort shows up on your bill first and in your house second.
- It cannot reach the thermostat setting on a hot afternoon. Capacity is dropping, and it will drop further.
- It runs constantly instead of cycling on and off. You are paying for runtime that is not buying you comfort.
- The house is cool but clammy. The system is not pulling humidity, which is often a sizing or airflow problem worth diagnosing before it becomes a replacement conversation.
- Ice on the refrigerant line or the coil. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Low refrigerant means a leak.
- Water around the indoor unit. A blocked drain, and the water goes somewhere, usually a ceiling or a floor.

Most air conditioners warn you before they quit. The house stops reaching the number on the thermostat. The unit runs almost continuously instead of cycling on and off. There is water on the floor near the indoor unit, or ice on the refrigerant line. Those are symptoms, not the problem, and the difference matters: a system that is short on refrigerant is short because it is leaking, and adding more without finding the leak just sells you the same repair again next summer.
So we diagnose the system, not the symptom. We check airflow, controls, electrical components, the drain, and the charge, because the part that failed is often the second thing to go wrong, not the first. Fixing the cause is what keeps a repair from turning into a replacement two summers early.
Then you get it in plain terms: what failed, what caused it, what it costs, and whether the repair is worth making on a unit of that age. You approve the price before we start, and we carry the common parts on the truck so most repairs finish the same visit.
The AC Tune-Up
We clean the condenser coil, check the refrigerant charge and pressures, test the capacitor and contactor, clear the condensate drain, and check airflow across the indoor coil. On a dual fuel system we also go through the thermostat programming, so the equipment changes over cleanly between heating and cooling and does not fight itself in the shoulder seasons.
Most of what we replace on this visit is a twenty dollar part doing a job that protects a compressor. A weak capacitor is cheap in April and expensive in July, because by July it has usually taken the compressor with it.
